Using your medication correctly

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has many different symptoms. And because of that, there are many different types of medications.

Some medication may be used every day. And others may only be needed when symptoms get worse or you have a flare-up.

The goal with any treatment is to take the right medicine at the right time with the right technique.

When using any devices, it’s important to follow the right steps every time. It’s also important to know the right situations when you’re supposed to take any medication.

Using your medication correctly will help you:

  • Control your symptoms
  • Keep COPD from getting worse
  • Reduce the risk of a flare-up
  • Improve your ability to have an active life

If you have questions on how to use any devices or are having trouble with your medication, talk to your health care providers. You can also ask your pharmacist.

The American Lung Association has instructional videos for how to use over a dozen different devices. Here are a few common types:

  • Dry powder inhalers
  • Metered-dose inhalers
  • Nebulizers
