Your surroundings can also impact your COPD

Common irritants in the air around you may not be serious for most people. But for people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), these irritants can make symptoms worse.

Be aware of what may be in the air around you

And make sure to minimize your exposure to the following when possible

Dust and pet hair in your home

You may be able to find home cleaning services through the Resources For Living® program.

Air quality and pollution

Check the air quality index (AQI) in your area and take the right precautions.

Seasonal allergies

Talk to your health care providers about how to keep your allergies under control.

Chemicals and fumes from household products

Choose odor- or fragrance-free soaps, detergents, cleaners, etc.

Seasonal illnesses — like cold, flu and COVID-19 — can be particularly risky for people living with COPD

Take extra precautions during cold and flu season, typically October through May. And make sure you get your flu and COVID-19 vaccines each year.
